Savannah Overton In The News: The ELLINGTON NEWS and more...

Machu Picchu, Peru. 9000ft elevation

After going through a rigorous application process, several Ellington students were selected to participate in the inaugural DCPS Global Education Study Abroad Summer Program. This program funded by the DC Education Fund has allowed for 400 8th and 11th graders to travel to 14 different countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, Central and South America. Ellington is proud to have 20 of our 11th graders representing the school in countries including Senegal, Belgium, Spain, The Netherlands, France, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, the Galapagos, Costa Rica, Argentina, Uruguay, and Peru. Trips have focused on service learning, language immersion or educational tours. Each student will be creating a "Making Global Local" Project that will be shared with everyone in the fall.

Ellington's Director of Admissions, Savannah Overton, led a group that included four Ellington students on a trip to Peru to discover culture, service and art in Lima and Cusco. During their nine-day trip, students painted ceramics and designed and painted a mural on a van as part of their service learning experience at Yachay Wasi preschool in Ollantaytambo, an Incan archeological site at 9,000 feet. One of the major highlights of the trip was hiking to the top of Machu Picchu. This, and the other DCPS study abroad trips, will truly be an experience that students will never forget.
